Welcome to the Animal Page
HAPPY SUMMER!!!
Wolves
Wolves are the largest members of the dog family. Adaptable gray wolves are by far the most common and were once found all over the Northern Hemisphere. But wolves and humans have a long adversarial history. Though they almost never attack humans, wolves are considered one of the animal world's most fearsome natural villains. They do attack domestic animals, and countless wolves have been shot, trapped, and poisoned because of this tendency.

Arctic Terns
Arctic Terns are medium-sized birds. They have a length of 33–39 cm (13–15 in) and a wingspan of 76–85 cm (26–30 in). They are mainly grey and white plumaged, with a red beak (as long as the head, straight, with pronounced gonys) and feet, white forehead, a black nape and crown (streaked white), and white cheeks. The grey mantle is 305 mm, and the scapulae are fringed brown, some tipped white. The upper wing is grey with a white leading edge, and the collar is completely white, as is the rump. The deeply forked tail is whitish, with grey outer webs. The hindcrown to the ear-coverts is black.

Goblin Shark
The goblin shark is a rare, poorly understood species of deep-sea shark. Sometimes called a "living fossil", it is the only extant representative of the family Mitsukurinidae, a lineage some 125 million years old. This pink-skinned animal has a distinctive profile with an elongated, flattened snout, and highly protrusible jaws containing prominent nail-like teeth. It is usually between 3 and 4 meters (10 and 13 ft) long when mature, though it can grow considerably larger. Goblin sharks inhabit upper continental slopes, submarine canyons, and seamounts throughout the world at depths greater than 100 m (330 ft), with adults found deeper than juveniles.

Giraffe
Giraffes are the world's tallest mammals, thanks to their towering legs and long necks. A giraffe's legs alone are taller than many humans—about 6 feet (1.8 meters). These long legs allow giraffes to run as fast as 35 miles (56 kilometers) an hour over short distances and cruise comfortably at 10 miles (16 kilometers) an hour over longer distances.Typically, these fascinating animals roam the open grasslands in small groups of about half a dozen. Giraffes, the tallest mammals on Earth, roam the African savanna in constant search for food, like treetop acacia buds.

White Face Monkey
The white-headed capuchin (Cebus capucinus), also known as the white-faced capuchin or white-throated capuchin, is a medium-sized New World monkey of the family Cebidae, subfamily Cebinae. Native to the forests of Central America and the extreme north-western portion of South America, the white-headed capuchin is important to rainforest ecology for its role in dispersing seeds and pollen.

Wooly Mammoths
Woolly mammoths were the largest species of mammals, they came extinct almost 4,000 years ago!! I was very surprised when I saw that! Beside their long, shaggy coats, woolly mammoths are famous for their extra-long tusks, which measured up to 15 feet on the biggest males. These huge tusks were most likely inherited selected characteristics.

TUFTED DEER
The tufted deer is a small species of deer characterized by a prominent tuft of black hair on its forehead and fang-like canines for the males. Although suffering from overhunting and habitat loss, this deer is not considered to be endangered. The coat is coarse with short and stiff hairs, being almost black in the winter and chocolate brown in the summer. The lips, tip of the ears, and the underside of the tails are white.

The Peacock Mantis Shrimp!
The Peacock Mantis Shrimp: The mantis shrimp is also known as “sea locusts“, “prawn killers” and “thumb splitters”. Their front claws can deliver a punch that is as powerful as a gunshot. The mantis shrimp can’t be kept in normal aquariums, as they punch through other sea life and even the glass.

THE BLIND SNAKE!
The Blind Snake! This unusual snake found in the Amazon has no eyes. It is presumed to be an aquatic, almost eel-like animal due to its fleshy dorsal fin on the body, but most people that know of it just call it a blind snake. This blind snake might look a little disgusting, but it is an exciting discovery for scientists, who believe it is closely related to salamanders and frogs. The creature was first discovered in South America in 1968, but was only discovered on the island of Mosquiro last year.

Zonkey
Zonkeys are a mix of zebra and donkey. They are found in southern parts of Africa. Because Zonkeys are hybrids they cannot have offspring of their own. Like their relatives, Zonkeys are herbivores. They eat grasses, fruits, and berries. Their predators are Lions and Hyenas.
In Italy there was a Zonkey born. Her name is Ippo. Ippo’s father is a zebra that was rescued from a failing zoo and his mother came from a breed of endangered donkeys. Although Ippo is the first zebra-donkey hybrid to be born in Italy, another zonkey was born in the United States in 2010, and there are reportedly a few zonkeys in Germany and China as well.

HEDGEHOG FUN FACTS!
The name for a baby hedgehog is a hoglet
Hedgies have poor eyesight, but excellent senses of smell and hearing
Each hedgie has around 5,000 needles, each of which lasts about a year
Hedgehogs are known as the gardener’s friend
European hedgehogs hibernate throughout winter
It is illegal to own a hedgehog in Pennsylvania Hedgehogs are not affected by adder venom
The first hedgehog was domesticated in 4 B.C.
They’re well-represented in literature
Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant
Fossa
Hailing from Madagascar, the fossa is basically a large, agile, muscular tree mongoose. It's the largest mammalian predator on the island and it hunts lemurs. The fossa is a cat-like, carnivorous mammal that is endemic to Madagascar. Both males and females have short, straight fur that is relatively dense and without spots or patterns. The fossa is active during both the day and the night. This animal looks like Moofasa!

Polar Bear
The polar bear is a carnivorous bear whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. They are very strong swimmers, and their large front paws, which they use to paddle, are slightly webbed. The bear's stark white coat provides camouflage in surrounding snow and ice. But under their fur, polar bears have black skin—the better to soak in the sun's warming rays.

Dumbo Octopus
Dumbo octopuses are so named for their likeness to the Disney elephant character. They live deep down in the ocean and and can be found at depths ranging from 400 meters down to as much as 4,800 meters. They hover a short distance above the sea bed while they look for prey. Eighteen species of dumbo octopuses have so far been discovered. The octopuses of the genus Grimpoteuthis are also known as Dumbo octopuses from the ear-like fins protruding from the top of their head-like bodies.

Red Lipped Batfish
The red-lipped batfish or Galapagos batfish. Red-lipped batfish are closely related to rosy-lipped batfish, which are found near Cocos Island off the coast of Costa Rica. This fish is mainly known for its bright red lips.
Batfish are not good swimmers; they use their highly-adapted pectoral fins to "walk" on the ocean floor. This structure is employed for attracting prey.
Interestingly, they are better suited for 'walking' along the ocean floor than swimming. When they reach adulthood, they use their dorsal fin as a fishing lure to attract prey instead of for swimming.

Komondor Dog
Bella and I (Ava) call this a mop dog. Many are over 30 inches tall, making this one of the larger common breeds of dog. The body is not overly coarse or heavy, however, and people unfamiliar with the breed are often surprised by how quick and agile the dogs are.
Its long, thick, strikingly corded white coat (the heaviest amount of fur in the canine world) resembles dreadlocks or a mop. The puppy coat is soft and fluffy. However, the coat is wavy and tends to curl as the puppy matures. The length of the cords increases with time as the coat grows. Shedding is very minimal with this breed, contrary to what one might think (once cords are fully formed). The only substantial shedding occurs as a puppy before the dreadlocks fully form. The Komondor is born with only a white coat, unlike the similar-looking Puli, which is usually white, black or sometimes grayish.

The Saiga Antelope
The saiga is a critically endangered antelope which originally inhabited a vast area of the Eurasian steppe zone from the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains and Caucasus into Dzungaria and Mongolia. They also lived in North America during the Pleistocene. Today, the nominate subspecies is only found in one location in Russia (steppes of the northwest Precaspian region) and three areas in Kazakhstan (the Ural, Ustiurt and Betpak-dala populations). A proportion of the Ustiurt population migrates south to Uzbekistan and occasionally Turkmenistan in winter. It is extinct in southwestern Mongolia. The Mongolian subspecies (S. t. mongolica) is found only in western Mongolia. The saiga typically stands 0.6–0.8 m (2 ft 0 in–2 ft 7 in) at the shoulder and weighs between 36 and 63 kg (79 and 140 lb). Their lifespans range from 6 to 10 years. The saiga is recognizable by an extremely unusual, over-sized, flexible nose structure, the proboscis.

The Aye-Aye
The aye-aye is a lemur primate native to Madagascar that combines rodent-like teeth and a special thin middle finger to fill the same ecological niche as a woodpecker.
It is the world's largest nocturnal primate, and is characterized by its unusual method of finding food; it taps on trees to find grubs, then gnaws holes in the wood using its forward slanting incisors to create a small hole in which it inserts its narrow middle finger to pull the grubs out. From an ecological point of view the aye-aye fills the niche of a woodpecker, as it is capable of penetrating wood to extract the invertebrates within. It is currently classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN a second species.

Tapir
A tapir is a large browsing mammal, similar in shape to a pig, with a short, prehensile snout. Tapirs inhabit jungle and forest regions of South America, Central America, and Southeast Asia. The five extant species of tapirs are the Brazilian tapir, the Malayan tapir, Baird's tapir, the kabomani tapir, and the mountain tapir. The four species that have been evaluated have all been classified as endangered or vulnerable. Their coats are short and range in color from reddish-brown to grey to nearly black. All tapirs have oval, white-tipped ears, rounded, protruding rumps with stubby tails, and splayed, hooved toes, with four toes on the front feet and three on the hind feet, which help them to walk on muddy and soft ground. Baby tapirs of all types have striped-and-spotted coats for camouflage.

Angora Rabbit
The Angora rabbit is a variety of domestic rabbit bred for its long, soft hair. The Angora is one of the oldest types of domestic rabbit, originating in Ankara, Turkey, along with the Angora cat and Angora goat. The rabbits were popular pets with French royalty in the mid 1700s, and spread to other parts of Europe by the end of the century. They first appeared in the United States in the early 1900s. They are bred largely for their long wool, which may be removed by shearing or plucking. There are many individual breeds of Angora rabbits, four of which are ARBA recognized. Such breeds include, French, German, Giant, English, Satin, Chinese, Swiss, Finnish, to name a few.
